Downtown Digs

If you walk downtown, you will see them in front of the Del Mar Library - a team of grubby volunteers working on the mosaic wall. Designed in 2003 by garden designers Betsy Schultz and Pat Welsh in collaboration, the wall has suffered water damage and now needs major repairs. The volunteers you see have been cleaning off each individual piece of mosaic using toothbrushes and pumice stones, as if they were archaeologisits at a dig. Once all is ready, the mosaics can be reinstalled with fresh mortar. The current project, spearheaded by Pat Welsh, began on December 1, 2012 and should be completed in March, 2013 - in plenty of time for the wall’s 10th birthday celebration.

Many of the volunteers are from the Del Mar Garden Club, the Master Gardeners of San Diego, and colleagues of Betsy Schultz. Other volunteers have been passers-by who wanted to join in. Some of these drop-ins are “snow birds,” people spending the winter here. The team includes, for example, a woman from New York and a man from Maine.

If you feel like getting involved, you would be most gratefully welcome. Wear old clothes and bring your toothbrush!
