DMCC ACTIVITIES SEPTEMBER 2009

We send our deepest condolences to the families of Jerry Wicke, Mickey Benjamin, Don Cook, Helen Glaser, Bob Melvin and Gene Requa who passed away this summer.

Senior Fitness - Tuesday & Thursday, 8, 9 or 10; September 8 - October 29, 2009. 10 am class is Low Impact Chair Fitness.

Tai Chi by the Sea - Monday, 10:30 - 11:30 AM; 8; September 14 - November 2, 2009

Writing Your Life Story - Thursday, 9 - 11:30 AM; October 1 - November 5, 2009 or Friday, 9:30 – Noon; October 2 – November 6

Singing Together begins again Tuesday, 9/15 – 3:30 – 5 pm - Chisari residence, 1010 Crest Road. Time to clear those pipes and join others in song to piano accompaniment as Singing Together resumes after our summer break! No reservations required; newcomers welcome.

Tue, 9/1 Free Museum Tuesday - Balboa Park Museum Bus Trip – 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Centro Cultural de la Raza, Model Railroad Museum, Natural History Museum, Timken Museum of Art. Bring a picnic lunch or dine on your own at a restaurant in the park. Coolers will be available on the bus. Valid picture ID showing San Diego County address required for free entry to museums.

Wed, 9/9 La Costa Glen Dinner & Tour – 3:45 – 7:15 pm
La Costa Glen offers a variety of 77 villas, 29 garden villas, and 539 apartment homes, contained securely on 55 acres in a park-like preserve. Residents enjoy the privacy of their independent living residence, surrounded by over 200 acres of natural beauty, rolling hills and valleys, and plenty of open space. Mon, 9/28 Shopping Trip to UTC - 9:30 am to 1 pm
Shop ‘til you drop and then join the group for lunch before returning home.

Tues, 9/29 Dr. Kalina’s Senior Health Forum begins its fall session through November 8. Join Dr. Kalina for his popular interactive discussions designed to empower participants to experience a higher level of health and well-being. New topics weekly. 10 – 11:30 am; Del Mar TV Studio, 240 Tenth St. Donations welcome.

Brain Fitness: Think faster; focus better; remember more. DMCC will be introducing a Brain Fitness computer-based program in October that is scientifically proven to improve memory, speed up thinking and sharpen focus. Curious? Call the office to add you’re your name to the list. 858-792-7565.
Weds, 10/7 Flu Shot Clinic – 9 am – 3 pm
Thanks to everyone who has already signed up for our annual Flu Shot Clinic! There’s still time to book your appointment! Appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes. 9, 9:15, 9:30, 9:45, 10, 11, 1 and 2 appointment times are all filled; no appointments scheduled between 12-12:30. Sat, 10/10 Thank You Reception for our donors and volunteers – 2 to 5 pm featuring the Second Annual Jerry Finnell Volunteer of the Year Award. Mix and mingle with friends and neighbors at the Scripps Research Institute Faculty Club, overlooking Torrey Pines Golf Course and ocean views! Come and meet the Scripps Genomic Medicine staff of the Wellderly Study “Uncovering the Genetic Secrets of Good Health”. They are looking to America’s “healthy elderly”; those 80 and older with no history of chronic disease, to help unlock the genetic secrets behind lifelong health. Would you like to join us? Mon 11/9 Your Home – Making It Your Safe Haven – 11 am. Lunch at Del Mar’s newest restaurant while enjoying table conversation, questions and answers with Darcy Muholland, Care Manager for DMCC’s Care Management Program. Darcy can help our older residents and their families develop solutions to the challenges of aging such as future long-term care needs and arrangements for in-home care. This is the first of regular monthly meetings with different topics each month. Bring your questions!
Do you like to Dance? North County Senior Dance Schedule adds a new venue with live entertainment the 2nd Wednesday of the Month! Belmont Village will be hosting an afternoon of dancing featuring live entertainment by the “Cradit Union” band starting Wednesday, September 9, 1:30 – 3:30; $4 donation. 3535 Manchester Ave., Cardiff.

Medication Reminder Calls
– We can help you remember to take those important medications! This can be especially helpful after a hospital stay. A daily telephone call reminds you. Contact the DMCC to sign up: 858-792-7565.

Medical Equipment to Loan – DMCC has wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and a wheelchair ramp ready to support you or a loved one on a temporary basis when needed, so there’s no need to buy or rent t hem. Simply call the office for availability and to reserve: 858-792-7565.
